James Shipman

BUNGS Captain 2006

I feel very honoured to have been elected as society Captain
for 2006. I would like to thank Tim for his sterling efforts
both on and off the golf course in 2005.

Last year Tim set and achieved some very realistic aims so
here are mine. Firstly to raise  ¼ of the money that Andy
Smith raised in 2004, secondly reduce my handicap by ¼ that
Tim Thacker managed in 2005, finally and most importantly
have fun doing the job. If I can do these I will be
delighted!

Steve, with the help of the committee, has lined up an
excellent menu of course once again. I hope all the places
will be booked at each golf day to ensure the continued
success of what must be the best golf society in the UK.

For me the highlight of the golfing year is the weekend
away. This year's trip is to Southport with what must be
some of the best links courses in England. I am looking
forward to choosing an opposing challenging captain in the
weeks ahead so if you have the bottle or know someone who
may be up for it get your nomination in.

Most of you will be aware last year I had open heart surgery to correct a leaking heart valve so it will come as no surprise that my nominated charity is the British Heart Foundation. Visit  http://www.bhf.org.uk/ for further details.

I wish you all a happy, successful and fun golfing year.

Captains Comments

1st September 2006
Can I remind you all that we need some more people to come along the the charity golf day taking place at Broughton Heath Golf Club on Saturday October 7th. The response to this fund raising event from the society members has been very very poor, so please have a re-think and see if you can come along, as it should be a lot of fun. Further information can be seen by clicking here.

BUNGS questionnaire results
I am grateful for the 19 responses received from members. 15 were in favour of a charity Golf event with 9 willing to pay a £15 and 6 a £10 levy. 13 indicated preference for a more informal do and only 8 were in favour of a Charity Ball. A mere 6 wanted a social gathering without fundraising and 3 indicated they preferred to keep golf and social lives separate. The majority were not bothered if children came to an informal do, with only 3 expressing if kids came this would stop them attending.

21st March 2006
I successfully completed my first half marathon around the Silverstone motor racing track on Sunday in 2 hours 21 minutes. The course was very exposed and windy but stayed dry. I am truly grateful to all my sponsors for this event and will endeavour to have a total figure of the amount raised as soon as possible. I expect the figure to be around £1000 from all source. Retrospective sponsorship welcome.

Could anyone who has sponsored me but not yet paid please do so before the end of March. Many thanks to sponsors from Barton-under-Needwood Golf Society, staff and patients at Wetmore Road Surgery, colleagues from East Staffordshire Primary care trust and my immediate family. Thanks also to Fitness First who provided me with 1 months complimentary membership to support my efforts.
