society history

The society started in 1992 under the name of The Shoulder of Mutton Golf Society which was run by the landlord of the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Barton under Needwood. When the landlord move onto pastures new in 1994, the organisation was taken over by a number of regular members who decided to change the name and officially register the society with the English Golf Union, the governing body for amateur golf in England.

Membership of the EGU gives the society the opportunity to play at over 1,800 affiliated golf clubs. Members of the society also have the opportunity to become associate members of the English Golf Union, enabling them to obtain a handicap as tangible recognition of their ability and to enable inter-play and competition.

The society organises eight days per year throughout the midlands including a weekend away. The majority of golf days consist of coffee on arrival, 9 holes in the morning, soup and sandwich lunch, 18 holes in the afternoon, three course meal followed by a prize giving. Golf days vary in cost between £30 and £50 depending upon the venue. We mainly play individual stableford competitions but we also try to incorporate a texas scramble and a four-ball better ball. A matchplay knockout is also organised each year along with a league cup trophy which is awarded to the most consistent golfer of the year.

We have members of all ages and all standards ranging from single figure handicappers through to beginners. Nobody feels out of place or embarrassed at their standard of golf as our aim is to have a days golf with a few laughs thrown in at EVERYONE'S expense.

The annual subscription fee is £15 which covers the general running costs of the society which include registration fees with the English Golf Union, stationery, postage etc. However, the first years membership of the society for new members will be free of charge to enable you to come along to a few golf days and see what the society is all about.
