Golf has been played in Woodhall Spa for over 100 years and The Hotchkin is Woodhall Spa’s premier course. The championship course is listed as the 20th best in the British Isles (60th best in the world) and has been voted the best inland course in England. The original layout dates back to the early 1900’s and since Colonel S V Hotchkin MC and C K Hutchison redesigned the course in the 1920’s, the course has remained virtually unaltered. It is an outstanding masterpiece of golf course architecture, set amongst banks of gorse and broom, backed up with layered canopies of oak, fir and towering silver birch and encapsulated all upon a glorious carpet of heather, the natural beauty of this Lincolnshire oasis serves only to emphasise the majesty of this famous course. Renowned for its formidable bunkers and narrow fairways, most visitors will remember the panoramic views of the 11th and the charm of the short 12th hole. It has often been stated by the golfing press and top players alike that there are 18 great holes on the Hotchkin. It has hosted many top national and international amateur events and, built on sandy soil and heathland in terrain it allows for year round play. A golfers’ course rewarding of good shots, considerate to the moderate, punitive to the bad – but always presented in pristine condition amidst wonderful natural surroundings.
Created from commercial woodland, scrub and arable farmland, Donald Steel’s vision for The Bracken Course has materialised into a course of exceptional finesse and imaginative design. Although it is situated alongside The Hotchkin, the design and terrain are quite different. Many of the holes are in a parkland setting and the remainder make good use of Bracken Wood at the far end of the estate. The fairway and greenside bunkers, together with the large undulating greens, provide a resemblance to an American style course. Much emphasis has been placed on ecology with many species of wild flowers encouraged to grow whilst, at the same time, securing the habitat of local wildlife. This subject is high on the list of priorities of the English Golf Union who, amongst its many roles, provide an advisory service on how to build golf courses in harmony with nature. Both courses are heathland in terrain and built on sandy soil, meaning they are excellent winter venues, with no temporary greens.

Situated just 600 yards from the golf course in the heart of Woodhall Spa’s conservation area and formerly called the Eagle Lodge Hotel, it is virtually unchanged externally since 1889.
What was once the Woodhall Spa hotel has been transformed into a chic brasserie, a family-orientated pub and carvery, and 26 luxuriously appointed rooms. They all have complimentary WIFI have the comforts of your own home such as Freeview TV, tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer, iron and ironing board and an en-suite bathroom with the added treat of fabulous linens, luxury toiletries and fluffy towels. Inside it will remind you that, during the Second World War, the hotel was once one of the drinking haunts of the famous RAF 617 Squadron, “The Dambusters”, as well as the airmen from 627 Squadron which flew Mosquitos on Pathfinder operations.
The INN brings a vibrant and upbeat venue to the tranquillity of Woodhall Spa, one of Lincolnshire’s most attractive villages. Sensitively blending the old with the new, the fine Edwardian building now houses modern and fully air-conditioned facilities.
Even though Woodhall Spa have pretty much guaranteed that they will be open if there is wet weather, snow would inevitably close the course. In the unlikely event of this happening, you must all be aware that you may well lose your deposits. The hotel are unlikely to accept a cancellation at very short notice, so the choice would be to either travel to the hotel for a non-golfing get-together or stay at home but still pay for the hotel.
